ABOUT EL BURRO ESTATE

El Burro Estate, owned by the Lamastus Family and managed by Wilford Lamastus in Boquete, Chiriquí, Panama, is a 65-hectare farm nestled in the Potrerillos region of Dolega. Of this, 30 hectares are dedicated to coffee cultivation and 35 hectares are preserved as forest reserve. The farm sits at an altitude of 1,575 to 1,800 meters and benefits from deep, sandy-loam soil, high sun intensity from late February to early May, and an average annual rainfall of 3,200mm. Coffee milling occurs between January and April, with flowering taking place in March through May, typically producing four to five flowerings. The estate grows Geisha and Catuai varieties in equal proportion under specialized shade-grown conditions, surrounded by a virgin forest reserve and a national park. This biologically rich cloud forest is home to exotic native species including the Quetzal and the jaguar.

The farm experiences unusual foggy and misty weather during the first half of the dry season. Fertilization is done by hand two to three times per year using chemical fertilizers, with fungicide applied twice annually—no insecticides or herbicides are used. Conservation efforts include planting native tree species that provide shade and nourishment for birds, reinforcing the estate’s role as a sanctuary for avian and mammalian wildlife. The primary labor force consists of Nögbe Indians, who are provided with housing, cooking facilities, and additional support as part of the farm’s ethical labor practices.
