SUMATRA: Indonesia Washed
Sumatra is a gorgeous heirloom, washed‑process coffee grown in the highlands of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia. This origin gives the coffee significant character. It is full‑bodied and rich, warm, mellow, and subtly deep, yet boldly expressive.
The cup is a multi‑layered experience, portraying earthy and robust tones that feel solid and grounded. It is heavily aromatic, with the scent of warmed dark chocolate, followed by subtle, light, and clean notes of orange.
Tasting Notes: Fig, Dark Chocolate, Tobacco, Orange Pekoe Tea
Cup score: 86.00 ☕
The robust nature of this coffee makes it an excellent option for cutting through milk‑based espresso drinks, while its light, tea‑like tones make it equally enjoyable as a filter brew. This balance makes the coffee remarkably versatile to brew.
ABOUT SIMALUNGUN AND THE KARO COOP
Nestled in the volcanic highlands of North Sumatra, the Simalungun and Karo regions have a deep-rooted tradition of coffee cultivation passed down through Batak families for generations. The Karo Community Coop brings together smallholder farmers, many tending less than a hectare, who rely on ancestral agroforestry practices that follow the natural rhythms of the rainforest. For them, coffee isn’t just a crop; it’s a cultural inheritance.
